    League One 2019-20 season preview

    Title challengers
It was little solace to a sore Sunderland dressing room at Wembley in May when Jack Ross said play-off heartbreak would strengthen his team but now, 10 weeks on, is the time to prove the bruising was not lasting. They froze that day, being too predictable, sheepish and slovenly in possession. Ross’s side came away empty-handed after a 61-game campaign despite losing only five times in the regular season. Nineteen draws hamstrung their automatic promotion hopes but they look primed to challenge for a top-two finish this time and the biggest question marks surround Ross and not his squad.

Supporters felt sure Will Grigg would fire them to promotion after Sunderland had an eighth bid, of £4m, accepted on deadline day in January but the striker’s return of four goals in 18 appearances was disappointing. If Grigg can rediscover the form that helped Wigan to promotion from this division in 2017-18, when he scored 19 league goals, they will be halfway there. Given the subsequent arrival of Marc McNulty on a season’s loan from Reading, Sunderland’s main task may seem to be how to load them.

Lee Cattermole has departed but they still possess plenty of nous. In Jordan Willis, the former Coventry captain, and George Dobson the manager has added another couple of leaders. Aiden McGeady is an outstanding performer at this level while Duncan Watmore can shine if he steers clear of injury. There are also talented youngsters, from homegrown winger Elliot Embleton, fresh from impressing at Grimsby, to Benji Kimpioka, a raw Swedish forward.

Portsmouth were head and shoulders above most of the division until suffering winter blues, which coincided with Ronan Curtis’s form tailing off, but the Republic of Ireland winger should return stronger after a dream debut season and Pompey look well equipped to go the distance. Kenny Jackett appears to have filled the void left by Matt Clarke, who has joined Brighton, with the signings of Sean Raggett and Paul Downing while the loan capture of Ross McCrorie from Rangers, who is highly regarded by Steven Gerrard, seems shrewd. Ellis Harrison failed to make the grade at Ipswich but the former Bristol Rovers forward gives Jackett another dimension in attack. If Jamal Lowe stays put amid Championship interest, Pompey will be hard to stop.

    Play-off contenders
As Peterborough’s chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, put it, they have not messed about this summer. “We want to deliver an historic season for our fans and we believe we can,” he said. “We want promotion, let’s not make any bones about it.” Darren Ferguson, in his third spell, is seeking his fourth promotion with them and few teams can boast such an impressive attacking armoury. Mo Eisa, from Cheltenham via Bristol City, represents their marquee signing, the striker arriving for a club-record £1.3m to complement Ivan Toney, who was prolific last season.

Posh have re-signed George Boyd and again recruited the cream of the crop from clubs beneath them, with Frankie Kent arriving from Colchester, Dan Butler from Newport, Christy Pym from Exeter and Serhat Tasdemir, an exciting teenage winger who started at Blackburn, signing from Fylde.

If Ferguson can coax more out of youngsters Idris Kanu, Siriki Dembélé and George Cooper, the results could be mouth-watering. “Technically he is way above this level and I said to him: ‘You’ll either be in the Premier League or Love Island in the next couple of years,’” said MacAnthony of Cooper.

Paul Lambert and Ipswich had four wins in seven months, paving the way to relegation, but James Norwood should end their struggle to score, Alan Judge will terrorise defenders if he can stay fit and the youngsters Flynn Downes, Jack Lankester and Andre Dozzell, who has been tracked by Norwich, will have an opportunity to flourish. When Ipswich signed a dozen players last summer the prospect of them gelling was wishful thinking but, 12 months on, some of those faces could thrive, with Janoi Donacien and Kayden Jackson determined to be a hit.

To mark a new Oyston-less era at Blackpool the club reappointed Simon Grayson as manager, a serial promotion winner from this division who led the Tangerines to the Championship in 2007. Sullay Kaikai, for so long seen as the heir to Wilfried Zaha at Crystal Palace, is an exciting signing as Grayson seeks to get a team, free from chaos, on an upward trajectory.

If Coventry can adapt to playing away from home for the second time in five years Mark Robins’s side could threaten, while a more dynamic Lincoln may surprise following promotion; Jack Payne, Jorge Grant and Joe Morrell are intriguing additions. The incomings at Shrewsbury suggest Sam Ricketts’s side are serious about making a play for the top six; they have signed players from both ends of the spectrum, with the Chelsea teenager Luke McCormick and 35-year-old Millwall striker Steve Morison arriving on loan. It is difficult to discount Rotherham’s chances of bouncing back under the inspiring Paul Warne, despite losing Semi Ajayi and Will Vaulks to West Brom and Cardiff respectively.

    Relegation candidates

Bolton and Bury have, inadvertently, spent the summer battling it out for the tag of the worst-run club in the country. That the latter submitted a team sheet comprising 22 trialists against Nantwich Town for a friendly three weeks before the beginning of the season tells its own story. Both start a shadow of their former selves, bogged down and beset by interminable takeover sagas, with skeleton squads and a 12-point deduction. Bury’s plight is such that their opening game has been suspended.

Wally Downes worked wonders as AFC Wimbledon avoided the drop and has strengthened the squad, including the intriguing signings of Nesta Guinness-Walker and Adam Roscrow from Metropolitan Police FC and Cardiff Metropolitan University respectively. Accrington Stanley, who limbered up for the new campaign with a friendly win over Marseille, will be tested as they seek to avoid second-season syndrome. Wycombe, Southend, Rochdaleand Oxford look worryingly light in key areas.

    Three players to watch
    Brandon Goodship, Southend

The striker came through the ranks at Bournemouth but had to drop into non-league in search of game time. After being released by Yeovil two years ago Goodship was a big hit at the part-time Southern League Premier Division side Weymouth, scoring 77 goals in 97 games (including five hat-tricks) and earning England C recognition in March. “It is nice to get back into full-time football,” the 24-year-old said. “I’m hungry to succeed.”

    George Boyd, Peterborough

Boyd will, according to the Peterborough owner, MacAnthony, finish his Football League career where he started it more than a decade ago following his release by Sheffield Wednesday. Ferguson believes the 31-year-old, who made his name as a winger, can be a force in central midfield.

    Colby Bishop, Accrington Stanley

The striker has quit teaching PE at a primary school in Newark to relive his dream of being a professional footballer. The 22-year-old dropped into non-league with Leamington after being released by Notts County and caught the eye of John Coleman, also a former teacher, after scoring 28 goals from October last season.

    League Two 2019-20 season preview

Scunthorpe and Plymouth should be contenders after their relegation to a division in which Stevenage could be dark horses

    Title challengers

There is a vast pool of exciting 40-something coaches determined to make a splash as managers, some of whom are taking their first plunge while others, notably Paul Hurst, are hungry to kick on. Determined not to allow a 14-game reign at Ipswich define his reputation, Hurst has the look of a managerial catch for Scunthorpe United, given his success at Grimsby and Shrewsbury where he surpassed expectations, eking every sinew out of his players. At Glanford Park, however, Hurst will have to cope with the expectation that comes with the territory of being fancied for an instant return to League One. The signing of Andy Butler, who started his career at the club, seems a sensible addition.

It is impossible to look beyond Plymouth Argyle as serious contenders, given how they have transplanted a promotion-winning squad into green and white. Plymouth are beneficiaries of Bury’s financial troubles, gutting last season’s runners-up by re-homing five of their players, as well as manager Ryan Lowe and his backroom staff. “I feel a little bit of guilt about it, but we paid good compensation for them,” said the Plymouth chairman, Simon Hallett. “The club [Bury] and its executives got itself into this mess, the players aren’t getting paid and they are young men who need income.” Lowe has also recruited fellow Liverpudlian Jose Baxter, who started his career at Everton and returned from a drugs ban last season, on a short-term contract.

After spectacularly stalling at the tail-end of last season, Mansfield Town will fancy their chances of going one better, with Nicky Maynard, who averaged a goal every 140 minutes at Bury last season, a superb free transfer, though the video that accompanied confirmation of his arrival made excruciating viewing. Bradford City, too, should be in the mix under Gary Bowyer; the former Everton striker James Vaughan, who has been given the captain’s armband, and Clayton Donaldson will cause defences problems, but it was picking the ball out of their own net that was a recurring theme last season.

    Play-off contenders

Mark Cooper’s Forest Green Rovers almost snuck into the automatic places in May and, despite losing in the play-off semi-finals, they will expect to go close once more having made huge strides in three years under Cooper. Losing Christian Doidge and Reece Brown was a big yet unsurprising blow and Rovers have recruited smartly, with Matt Mills, formerly of Nottingham Forest, joining his younger brother Joseph at the club. Up the M5, it would be a surprise if a new-look Walsall were not in the reckoning under Darrell Clarke, while Richie Wellens can send Swindon close in his first full season; Zeki Fryers, formerly of Manchester United, is an eye-catching signing.

Exeter City will be expected to challenge after falling short last season and Matt Taylor has freshened up his squad with nine new faces, including the former Reading goalkeeper Lewis Ward and forward Nicky Ajose. Mike Flynn worked wonders to guide Newport County into the play-offs on the back of another fine FA Cup run last season but repeating that feat looks a tall order.

Salford City have grand plans but a fifth promotion in six seasons may prove too big an ask. The former Burnley defender Graham Alexander continues to be handsomely backed by the Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim and the ‘Class of 92’, with Richie Towell, who featured for Rotherham in the Championship last season, an eye-catching signing from Brighton, but whether they can topple the top seven remains to be seen. Stevenage could be dark horses under Dino Maamria, if they can start where they left off last season. If new signings gel with a youthful group – Luther Wildin, 21, and Arthur Iontton, 18, have shone – they could shake things up. The arrival of Jason Cowley is intriguing, with the striker signing from non-league Bromsgrove Sporting, for whom he scored 102 goals in 127 appearances.

    Relegation candidates

Thirteen successive seasons at this level is not to be sniffed at but Morecambe begin, as they do every season, up against it. By now, though, Jim Bentley, the longest-serving manager in the country at eight years and 78 days and counting, is used to the battle. Kevin Ellison will play on past his 41st birthday but Andy Fleming has been forced to retire aged 31, because of a serious knee injury. “He was the only outfield player still at the club since I played,” said Bentley, who has signed defender Tom Brewitt, who came through the youth ranks alongside close friend Harry Wilson at Liverpool.

Laurent Banide worked with a baby-faced David Trezeguet and Thierry Henry at Monaco but after almost a decade working in the Far East, he becomes the 12th manager in four years at Oldham Athletic, where he has saidhis role does not include recruiting players. Paul Scholes lasted just 31 days and after another summer of sea change – including eight signings – it is impossible to predict the outcome of their latest experiment. Elsewhere, financial unrest still plagues Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield Town, while Gabriele Cioffi’s Crawley Town have work to do.

    Three players to watch

    Danny Mayor, Plymouth Argyle

Ryan Lowe endeared himself to supporters by bullishly telling them he has signed the “best No 10 in the league” in Mayor, insisting the former Bury midfielder, who won the League Two player of the year award last season, is better than Graham Carey and Ruben Lameiras, two former Devon darlings. A versatile winger, Mayor, like Lowe, is gunning for successive promotions.

    Danny Guthrie, Walsall

After a stint in Indonesia, the former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder, who was born in Shrewsbury, has returned closer to home following a trial. The 32-year-old, who made more than 100 Premier League appearances, last played in England for Blackburn. “You need a good balance in League Two, plenty of energy and a bit of know-how,” said manager Darrell Clarke.

    Aaron Collins, Forest Green Rovers

The striker went from McDonald’s to Molineux in less than two years, earning a move to Wolves after impressing at Newport as a teenager but following his release in January, the 22-year-old had to rebuild his confidence. Collins impressed at Morecambe, scoring eight goals in 15 games to earn a summer move to a side serious about chasing promotion under Mark Cooper.

    Championship 2019-20 season preview

Fulham could bounce straight back with their four-man attack while Leeds are sure to be in the promotion mix and Neil Warnock’s Cardiff are not to be ignored

    Title challengers

There may not be an overwhelming favourite for automatic promotion but certain teams appear streets ahead in the firepower stakes. None more so than Fulham, who will likely start with an attacking diamond of Aleksandar Mitrovic, a Premier League striker in all but name, Anthony Knockaert, Ivan Cavaleiro and Tom Cairney, a player capable of running games in this division. Fulham deservedly took flak for their lavish and directionless spending last summer but it is impossible to ignore their latest business. They were, though, a soft touch in defence last season, so Scott Parker still has plenty to address, and the expectation will prove a test of his credentials.

Leeds United, too, possess ample bite, despite Marcelo Bielsa sanctioning the departure of Pontus Jansson. As Leeds flailed in April, the Argentinian stated his squad would struggle to reproduce the performances that propelled them from 13th to third but Bielsa was doing himself a disservice. Bielsa has tickled a small squad – Helder Costa, Jack Harrison and Ben White have arrived on loan – but after a brutal pre-season, including a trip to Sydney, triple and even quadruple sessions, they are down to bare bones after injuries to Luke Ayling and Kemar Roofe and will start with one fit senior striker, Patrick Bamford. If Bielsa were not in situ, Leeds’s hand would be considerably weaker.

Write off Neil Warnock at your peril, with the 70-year-old targeting a record ninth promotion. Cardiff City’s squad is packed with Championship quality and Warnock has supplemented it with the smart additions of Joe Day, Aden Flint, Curtis Nelson and Will Vaulks, who will take on Aron Gunnarsson’s long-throw duties. “The first meeting I had with him, I knew he was our cup of tea,” Warnock said of Vaulks, who earned a Wales call-up after impressing at Rotherham. “This is probably the best Championship team I’ve ever managed.” Having kept hold of the excellent Neil Etheridge in goal, a defence led by Sean Morrison, as they were when promoted last time, is going to be hard to beat.

If West Bromwich Albion are to succeed under Slaven Bilic much will hinge on Kenneth Zohore filling the goalscoring boots of Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle. The return of Romaine Sawyers, who left the Hawthorns for Walsall without a first-team appearance six years ago, will freshen up the midfield but the arrival of Zohore, who scored once last season, may not be enough up front. Should Sam Vokes and Benik Afobe strike up a partnership, a new-look Stoke City could threaten in Nathan Jones’s first full season, having added seven players including the nonchalant Nick Powell.

    Play-off contenders

Several clubs will fancy their chances of breaking into the top six but Bristol City are among the best equipped. They have made several eye-catching additions, with Jay Dasilva and Tomas Kalas arriving permanently from Chelsea, joining a vibrant team determined to improve after knocking on the door last season. Brentford, too, will feel this could be their year. If they can keep Saïd Benrahma and Neal Maupay they could make a play for the top two, with Jansson and Ethan Pinnock sound defensive additions after losing Ezri Konsa. “The players are in a very good place, there is a very good spirit and atmosphere,” said head coach Thomas Frank. “The five new signings have integrated and settled.”

Jan Siewert has tasted victory only once since taking over at Huddersfield Town in January but will be quietly confident of restoring the Terriers to the top table. They have added a leader in Tommy Elphick and the Liverpool loanee Kamil Grabara excelled at the Under-21 European Championship for Poland. Karlan Grant made a big impression at the end of last season and will be joined by Josh Koroma and Reece Brown, intriguing additions from Leyton Orient and Forest Green Rovers respectively. Nottingham Forest do not lack experience but have a bloated squad of more than 30 players and are an unknown quantity under Sabri Lamouchi.

A youthful Swansea City could prove dark horses, though the imminent loss of Oli McBurnie to Sheffield United has dampened optimism and it remains to be seen how Steve Cooper fares as a first-team club manager after more than a decade coaching at youth level with Liverpool and England. The teenage defender Ben Wilmot, who spent six months of last season with Udinese in Serie A, has joined on loan from Watford and is an interesting acquisition.

The same can be said for Jonathan Woodgate in his first managerial post at Middlesbrough, though he has promised to entertain supporters after a few staccato seasons . Woodgate, who counts Sir Bobby Robson, Terry Venables and Aitor Karanka among his mentors, will have to eke out more from a squad that for too long has flattered to deceive. Then there is Derby County, who may need to give Phillip Cocu time to implement his methods.

    Relegation candidates

Whether Pep Clotet can get a tune out of a Birmingham City squad hit by the departure of Che Adams remains to be seen and it is difficult to envisage Queens Park Rangers faring too well without their star performer, with Luke Freeman sold to Sheffield United. But Mark Warburton has padded out an extremely green squad with some senior heads, with Marc Pugh and Geoff Cameron accomplished at this level. That experience and the arrival of Jordan Hugill on a season’s loan should complement the flair and trickery of Eberechi Eze and Ilias Chair, who excelled on loan at Stevenage last season.

Millwall narrowly survived last season and, despite bolstering their ranks, are likely to be in for another scrap. Whether Jarrod Bowen stays at Hull Citywill likely dictate their whereabouts, while Barnsley, Charlton and Lutonmust adapt following promotion. “We ain’t ready to go in and compete like we want to but I’m hopeful before the window closes we will have another four or five bodies in,” said Lee Bowyer, who signed a one-year contract extension at Charlton in June, hours after the club appeared to announce his departure. “We have to bring in men and people that are ready because it is a dogged league.”

Daniel Stendel’s Barnsley had the meanest defence in League One last season but captain Adam Davies, Liam Lindsay and Pinnock have departed. They have, however, made a number of exciting signings, notably Mallik Wilks from Leeds, while Luton must also rebuild defensively after being raided by Leicester and Bournemouth for James Justin and Jack Stacey respectively. Wigan have struggled to strengthen, while José Gomes plans to elevate a youthful Reading to new heights after steering them clear of trouble last season. The England Under-20 striker Danny Loader, 18, midfielders Josh Barrett, 21, and Andy Rinomhota, 22, defender Tom McIntyre, 20, and striker Yakou Méïté, 23, will lead the charge, aided by the experience of signings Charlie Adam and Michael Morrison.

    Three players to watch

    Dan Crowley, Birmingham City

Still only 21, the playmaker formerly at Arsenal was once considered one of the country’s brightest prospects. Encouraged to go to the Netherlands to repair a bad-boy image, he impressed for Eredivisie side Willem II last season. Crowley, who started at Aston Villa before leaving for north London as a 15-year-old, returns to the Midlands with something of a point to prove after unsuccessful loan spells in League One at Barnsley and Oxford.
    Steven Sessegnon, Fulham

His twin brother, Ryan, needs little introduction but this season could be the chance for Steven to make a similar splash. The 19-year-old, who operates at right-back, is also of considerable interest to Tottenham despite the fact he is yet to make his league debut. Part of the England Under-17 team that won the World Cup two years ago, he featured for the Under-20s this summer. Will battle with Cyrus Christie for a starting berth if he stays.

    Sammie Szmodics, Bristol City

Last season was his most productive, scoring 15 goals for Colchester, whom he joined aged seven before making his debut six years ago. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder possesses plenty of verve and has whetted supporters’ appetite with a delicious lob in pre-season. Could prove a snip at £750,000 and has all the tools to be a fans’ favourite. Another former Colchester player, Macauley Bonne, could shine at Charlton.

Premier League 19/20
